What is it?
Fluoxetine is an anti-depressant that is classified as a so-called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Fluoxetine is believed to work by adjusting chemical imbalance in the brain—imbalance it is believed may be leading to one or more of several psychological disorders, ranging from depression, panic, and anxiety, to obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Fluoxetine is used to treat major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa , obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
Commonly reported side effects
- Hives
- Itching
- Skin rash
- inability to sit still
- Restlessness
- Decreased appetite
Less commonly reported side effects
- Chills
- Fever
- Muscle pain
- Joint pain
- Abnormal or vivid dreams
- Breast pain/breast enlargement
- Changes in taste sensation
- Changes in vision
- Hair loss
- Weight loss
- Menstrual pain
- Increased need to urinate
- Feeling of heat/flushing on face or neck
- Sensitivity to sunlight
- Stomach cramps
- Gas
- In women, unusual milk secretion
- Yawning
Although fluoxetine is the drug's chemical name, it has been sold under the more familiar brand name Prozac.
