Sleep is closely tied to mental health. This has been known for some time (read here and here). More study has revealed that sleep apnea can dramatically increase a person's likelihood of having a mental disorder.
Snoring, which is caused by either sleep apnea or obesity, usually lowers the brain's oxygen intake during sleep. This, in turn, can lead to disrupted sleep and, worse, possible brain dysfunction. It is not unusual for sleep medications (specifically muscle relaxants) to make this problem worse, which is why most physicians will refer patients with chronic sleep problems to sleep clinics for evaluation.
Sleep deprivation is one of the most common conditions Americans suffer from. Most of us operate on a sleep deficit - we are behind in our sleep, forcing our body to make up for it through various coping mechanisms and through the intake of stimulants.
For the most part, people can alleviate most of their sleep problems through simple improvements to diet and exercise as well as with more adequate sleep periods in order to get a full night's rest.
Currently, new research is looking into the link between sleep deprivation and mental disorders such as bipolar and related mood disorders. Preliminary studies suggest that correcting sleep problems may decrease or correct symptoms diagnosed as bipolar.
