Dodgers Hong-Chih Kuo Out with Anxiety Condition

Hong-Chih Kuo, a reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an anxiety disorder. This marks the second time this year and sixth time in his professional career that the left-hander is sitting out.

L.A. manager Don Mattingly had this to say on the matter after his team’s 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

“He couldn't put the ball where he needed to. That's pretty much what he said. I listened to him, and I have so much respect for him, after all he's been through. It's just one of those things."

Up through Monday, Kuo pitched three times in four days. On the year, he’s put up an 11.57 ERA in nine showings and six walks in 4 2/3 innings. On Thursday, the reliever said that he had no problems physically, and wasn’t able to pinpoint a specific reason why he was having so much difficulty with his command.

"When you're talking about Kuo, he is basically always hurting," Mattingly said Wednesday. "It's just at what level. His elbow is always hurting. It never goes away, really. It's just how much he can deal with. It is always there. ... When I say he doesn't complain, it means that in talking with [trainer] Stan [Conte], when he says he is good to go, that means he can deal with it. His 'I'm OK to go' is different than being 100 percent.

"But he isn't good to go [now]."

To fill the hole left behind by Kuo, the team recalled left-hander Scott Elbert from Triple-A Albuquerque.
