One of the most common causes of memory problems is cognitive decline associated with aging. One example of this is dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. In your case, the most likely cause is depression, which can make it difficult to focus as your mind is continually ruminating over the objects of your misfortune.
Visit a psychiatrist to have your memory difficulties assessed. A psychiatrist can assess for one of many emotional disorders that could be the cause and also rule out any actual problems with your brain.
