Permanent relief for depression

Myself is Venkatasubramanian,a telecom engineer in a Telecom PSU in India.I fell victim to OCD/DI at the age of 32 and started taking SSRI,Fluvoxin 50 mg along with Tryptomer75 mg at the age of 33.Today I am 50 years old with no apparent side effects except my weight gain. In between 2 years before, suddenly I withdrew both the medicines for 2 months on the wrong advice of a Psychiatrist here in my small town, incidently leading to total motor control loss with total impairment of balance in all my physical activities. However with the timely medical help of another Psychiatrist I was back to my normal dosage of both the medicines and recovered back to my normalcy.Ultimately I got settled with Tryptomer dosage alone in another 2 months.Meanwhile recently some 6 months before I had to undergo mental trauma for about 3 months in my office on my transfer issue and at the end of the period I once again started getting the OCD symptoms and put back into Fluvoxine 50 mg,Tryptomer 50 and Lonazap 0.25 mg again for the past 3 months.I have become perfectly well for the past 40 days and I am able to carry on routine official as well as my personal responsibilities without any problem. But for the past 2 days I have started feeling feeble symptoms of OCD for which I have fixed appointment with my Psychiatrist on 29-01-12 for her consultation. My humble request to you whether this OCD/DI cann't be cured permanently?.Shall I
have to live with the impact of this now and then in my whole life period?

Hi Rajeswari, I'm not quite

Hi Rajeswari,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by OCD/DI (the "DI" is not an acronym I've seen used, but perhaps you are referring to OCD with depression?).

Both OCD and depression can be treated successfully (although with OCD some mild to moderate symptoms may continue to recur). It really depends on many different factors, including the severity of the disorder(s) as well as other factors unique to the individual.

While medication can help the symptoms of OCD and depression, in many cases (and the vast majority of OCD cases) once the medication is stopped, the symptoms eventually return. The most effective long-term treatment for OCD is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which focuses on the irrational thoughts that are at the core of the disorder. CBT helps you manage those thoughts, and in some cases, overcome them altogether. CBT is also one of the most effective treatments for depression as well.

If you've never had therapy for either disorder, that is what I recommend. But, I don't recommend just any therapy - I recommend CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) with a therapist who is well trained in using it and who has successfully treated other individuals with OCD. It may take some time to find a therapist with those qualifications, but I believe it would be worth your while.

I hope this helps.
