rhythm birth control method

I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly how the rhythm birth control method works. When is the better time to have sex, before or after having your period? Also, how soon after having unprotected sex can I take a pregnancy test (the soonest possible time) that will give me accurate results? My bf and I had unprotected sex a day or two after my period and we don't want to wait the whole month to find out whether or not we're in trouble (we both come from very deeply religious Catholic families). Please reply soon.
