I took it for 6 years I was only 27 when I started. No periods..... thats great ! But now I am only 33 and I have been diagnosed with "osteopenia" because of the DepProvera. When I gave up the periods I also gave up the density of my bones without ever knowing. No one ever told me to supplement with calcium, etc... I thought the only side effect was the weight gain of about 5 pounds a year was it. After all I was young...in good shape...thin and not very vain about my body weight anyway. So I took it thinking it was worth the extra few pounds to not have a period. Boy was I wrong. I have spent so many years bragging to all my girlfriends about this "great medication", I used to call it the greatest thing to happen to women since, (can't say it here)Haha!
And now I have the bones of a sixty year old woman. So I regret chemically inducing a post menopausal state with my body. So I suggest before you take it for any extended period of time you check with a Doctor who "really knows" about updated womens health issues. My doctor was totally unaware this was a potential problem and let me go on taking it for 6 years. If it wasn't for a friend who specializes in "womens health" mentioning it to me I would have never known to ask my Doctor for a bone density scan. The day I got the results I was devastated, after all I had brought this on with my selfish want to "loose my period".... this is a lesson I have learned the hard way. Ya just don't mess with mother nature.
