Got milk? Then you got brain!

According to a recent study, drinking a glass of milk nourishes your body and your brain. Milk positively impacts brain and mental performance when compared to the performance of those who do not drink milk.

This is according to a study in the International Dairy Journal. Adults with higher intakes of milk and milk products scored significantly higher on memory and other brain function tests.

More than 900 men and women aged 23 to 98 were put through a series of brain tests. These included visual-spatial, verbal and working memory tests. They tracked the milk consumption of the participants.

In a series of eight different tests of mental performance, those who drank at least one glass of milk each day had the better results. The highest scores for all eight outcomes were found in those people who drank and ate the most dairy products regardless of age.

The benefits remained even after adjusting for other factors that can affect brain health like cardiovascular health and lifestyle choices. Even more impressive, the milk drinkers had better health overall.

While more study is needed, there may be something about milk specifically that helps the brain. Scientists suggest some of milk’s nutrients may have a direct effect on brain function. No one would argue that drinking a glass of milk a day may be a fast, inexpensive way to fend off dementia in an aging population.

You can bet the Dairy Council will be promoting the emerging brain health benefits as just one more reason to incorporate dairy into the diet.
