Increased Brain Activity From Cell Phones a Good Thing?

brain-mri.jpg

As a result of a recent JAMA study regarding cell phone radiation and brain activity, the question of whether or not the increase in activity is helpful or harmful has been debated.

While it appears to be generally acknowledged that nobody really knows what the long-term implications of cell phone usage are, most appear to agree that it is better to limit exposure to cell phone radiation. After all, nobody has actually come out and said that too much cell phone usage can be a good thing, right?

Not exactly.

Now, a new school of thought is reaching the mainstream that seems to believe that the increase in brain activity that stems from cell phones may actually be a good thing. According to Reto Huber, a professor at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich, cell phones may be utilized as a tool that can stimulate parts of the brain that aren’t properly functioning or interact with brain rhythms.

Some are pointing to the very that brain stimulation techniques are being utilized for conditions like depression, and wondering if cell phones could be used in similar fashion. After all, things like shock therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) have become common practice when dealing particular issues involving the brain – with new devices being added on a regular basis.

Considering that cell phones induce an additional brain activity of about 7 to 8 percent, about the same as TMS, the idea may not be that far-fetched.
