Treat OCD From Your Computer?

In the past, treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other similar conditions required going from doctor to doctor, seeking out continuously changing tips on how to maintain mental health wellbeing. Now, according to Dr. Gregory Simon, a psychiatrist and senior investigator with Group Health Research Institute in Seattle, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home.

By virtue of easy-to-use technology that interconnects sufferers all over the world, more and more people are getting help for their respective anxiety disorders – OCD included.

"You gain a lot more convenience," said Dr. Gregory Simon, a psychiatrist and senior investigator with Group Health Research Institute in Seattle. "They don't have to come down to your office, and you don't have to play telephone tag with patients.

"It seemed to be just as effective as the telephone," Simon said. "People were more satisfied with their care, their depression was more likely to improve and they were more likely to take their medications as directed."
And if it works for depression, it can work for OCD as well. In fact, another Drexel University study conducted recently pointed to Skype as being an effective means for evaluating people with OCD.

"People find it either inconvenient or difficult or embarrassing to make contact with those kinds of therapists," Evan Forman, a key figure in that study said. "In most of the country, you'd have a hard time finding someone with the appropriate training."

"So far, we have very encouraging results," he said. "It's been very successful, both in terms of our ability to deliver the treatment and in patients' response to therapy."

While technology isn’t making face-to-face meetings with doctors obsolete just yet, it is making key strides in making life easier for sufferers all over the world.
