Abused Women More Likely to Develop Mental Problems

depressed-girl.jpg

According to new research, women who have suffered from gender-based violence are more likely to develop various anxiety and mental disorders.
For the purposes of this analysis, gender-based violence included rape, other forms of sexual assault, intimate-partner violence and stalking.

Women who experienced three to four types of gender-based violence were 10 times more likely to develop an anxiety disorder than women who weren’t exposed to such occurrences. Furthermore, women who had been subjected to violence were six times more likely to develop a substance abuse problem.

"Gender-based violence is a public health problem and occurs to many women. Women need to recognize that the social and psychological problems they are experiencing may be related to their past or current exposure to violence and not pass these reactions off to other causes," said the study's lead author, Susan Rees, a senior research fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
Speaking to the U.S. World and News Report, one researcher echoed the importance of these findings.

"This study really demonstrated the extent of gender-based violence and the long-term consequences of violence against women," said Andrea Gielen, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. "There are huge implications for health services; this is not just a one-time treatment in the ER for a broken bone. People who treat women for any health-related issues need to think about the extent that such violence can affect women," Gielen said.

Results of the study are published in the Aug. 3 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

I do really agree that abused

I do really agree that abused women are definitely more prone to mental illness, drugs, drink etc., and sometimes, for some minor faults which are pardonable, some women from respected families are Divorced with Kids and then starts a woman's responsibility for Kids, social apathy, mis-use of women in the name of HELP from cunning Male fellows etc. Such women should not succumb to drugs etc., but rather deeply Plunge into Spirituality and correct their past mistakes. Sometimes, there will be lot of Anger on God only, but slowly we have to console and calm our INNER MIND, which creates Mischief. I hv seen one women in my life who was Divorced Twice, because of her heavy drinking and extra-marital affairs, but 3 years back, due to liver failure, she died before 48 years of age. So, parents, brothers, friends of such women MUST support such exploited Women and in our Peculiar/semi-literate Society, Widows are more common to Harassment and victimization. In the Hindu Society, which is Impractical, biased, cunning n hatching shadyantra(plan to do bad), WIDOWS are just KILLED, Livingly and Society says it is their Past life/this Life Karma, which, most of the time may not be Correct. God save such women.I have seen Widows being sexually mis-used and later on called as Prostitutes behind their back - what a world, what a people.Till one tastes her Boobs and other body parts, she will be treated like Queen, but more Youths should come forward to marry Widows. //rm agadi//
