HOCD?

Hi,
I'm 19 years old.. I turn 20 next month. All my life I have suffered from OCD, I've spent most of my life crying and worrying about things that scare some example are, I was afraid to eat because i thought I was going to choke, I feared no one liked me, and my freshman year of high school even though it only lasted about 3 to 4 months i feared of being a lesbian. I've been with my boyfriend for almost four years and I love him very much, but lately these thoughts are really making me scared there all i think about 24/7 its sometimes hard to breathe i don't want to do anything because sit at home and think about all the boys i've liked in my life and cry. I've been on zoloft for about 6 months now, and last month i messed up on taking them im on 50 mg and hope to be going up to 100mg soon, i fear this will ruin my relationship with my boyfriend,I'll lose all my friends and ruin my school. This is a very uncomfortable feelings and I don't want to talk or spend time with any of my friends, i just want to be with my boyfriend. Do i have HOCD?

Hi BN1991, It does sound like

Hi BN1991,

It does sound like you have HOCD. Has the person who is prescribing your medication ever suggested psychotherapy? SSRIs like Zoloft can help to some degree, but should not be used as the primary form of treatment for OCD or any other anxiety disorder. They are best used in combination with psychotherapy.

I strongly recommend that you find a therapist who specializes in the treatment of OCD (if possible). Not all therapists have the skills or training to effectively treat this disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is generally considered the best type of treatment, so it's best to work with a therapist who uses CBT.

CBT techniques help you control and change thought patterns that are playing a significant role in your OCD. It will take time and commitment, but it can be very effective.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best!

Dr. Lane
