Family Support and Acceptance of LGBT Youth Reduces Depression and Suicide Risk in Early Adult Years

teen girl

The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing has published a recent study that shows a strong correlation between family acceptance and support of their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) teens and children, and a much lower risk of suicidal ideation and behavior, and depression in early adulthood. It also decreases the risk of substance abuse.

Prior to this study, no research had been done that looked at the importance of family acceptance towards LGBT teens and mental health issues in early adulthood.

The study helps to shed light on the best ways that families can support LGBT children and teens. Many families want to be supportive and accepting when their child comes out, but they don’t always know how. Studies like this will help the mental health community determine how to best support these families and decrease future risk of depression and suicide in their LGBT children.
