I need to find a doctor to treat me...Can anyone HELP?

I have suffered w/ severe depression since I was diagnosed @ 12 yrs. old. @ 22 yrs. old bipolar disorder was added. I've only had 1 manic episode& that was right before I was diagnosed w/ the bipolar. But since this whole depression crap started, my biggest problem was my energy level. It has gotten to the point that I am SO tired I hold my urine until the absolute end just so I don't have to get out of bed. Here's my theory... After I had my 1st child, my son, I breast fed him for 6-8 wks. I was w/out depression symptoms for 2yrs. After I had my 2nd child, my daughter, I was determined to breast feed her longer(keep in mind I had no knowledge of oxytocin until early 2011). I breast fed her for 3-4mos. & had no depression symptoms for 2.5yrs after her birth. I have gone through my phonebook looking for a doctor to treat me w/ oxytocin for depression, everyone said no. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if anyone has knowledge of a doctor that takes state insurance and is in Wisconsin or even out if state, PLEASE let me know. I cannot go on like this anymore. I have gone off all my psyciatric drugs in March 2011. I think I have tried every med out there. I am almost positive that this treatment will work, I just need someone w/ a degree to HELP ME!
Thank you,
Jaclyn

Hi Jaclyn, While there is

Hi Jaclyn,

While there is some research that has shown lower levels of oxytocin in people with depression, it is not being used to treat depression at this time. That is why you can't find a doctor who is willing to do so.

Currently there is a lot of research on ocxytocin for the treatment of autism and related disorders, but much more research needs to be done. Oxytocin injections are sometimes used to induce labor for medical reasons (but not for elective labor).

Oxytocin is naturally released in the body primarily during cuddling and orgasm. Because of this it is often referred to as the "love hormone".

You are assuming oxytocin is going to make your mood symptoms go away because you didn't have them while you were nursing. While that may have been partially due to oxytocin (I don't know if it was or not) it may have been due to other factors as well.

If you have bipolar disorder and are no longer nursing, I strongly suggest you reconsider taking your medication. I also strongly recommend psychotherapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - research shows that CBT is one of the most effective types of therapy for depression.

I know this isn't the response you are hoping for, but your quest for a doctor who will use oxytocin to treat your depression is likely futile.

Dr. Lane
