I think I have Dermatillomania...

I think I bite and pick at my skin because I feel a loss of somekind.....My Husband focuses more on our sexual attractions rather on the other aspects of our relationship. Could that be the reason why I pick?

Hi Lorie, Dermatillomania is

Hi Lorie,

Dermatillomania is in impulse control disorder, and the causes are likely a combination of environmental and biological factors.

Stress can certainly play a role, as some people do it as a way to self-soothe. That may be part of the reason you are doing it - because of the sense of loss you are experiencing.

People also do it out of boredom, or due to perfectionism - in that they are trying to remove any perceived flaws in their skin.

It would be good to pay attention to what you are feeling when you have the urge to pick at or bite your skin. For example, do you often do it when you are angry, sad, stressed, frustrated, etc? This may give you some insight as to what is triggering it.

Some people find (if their case isn't severe) that using finger toys can help keep your hands occupied so they don't pick at their skin. if you are doing it a lot, it is causing you distress, or if you are significantly damaging your skin, you may want to work with a therapist.

I hope this helps!
